Pretty much with all the horror novels I read I get that feeling. The whole 'oh, well of course you're going to be murdered if you go into the basement without a flash light after you hear a noise' thing. It can be kinda tough to read, annoying almost, but I agree with you-- it should have been expected that the Taliban would do something about it.
