Diwali Holidays and a whole lot of random stuff!!!

My job contract with the company I was working with ended in September and since then I’ve had some time on my hands to read, blog and do other things. But mostly I find myself doing is watching YouTube videos and catching up on all the chick flick movies. I have been a little better at reading and blogging too I think.

I finished The Hunger Games 2 days back and absolutely loved it. I cannot wait to read the next 2 books.聽 I have already ordered Mockingjay and will be buying Catching Fire once I reach Mumbai because it so happens that Landmark has a sale that will go on till the end of October and since Landmark is my most favorite bookstore and their sale my most favorite sale ever. I can’t wait.

We are leaving on 8th October, we’ll be spending some time in Mumbai and then at my home in Pune. I cannot wait to meet my family and friends and spend time in my favorite city. I can’t wait to shop too without feeling guilty about spending too much.

I am yet to start packing which I happen to hate. Since we also have a lot of Diwali gifts to carry back home I’m not sure how I will fit everything else. So not looking forward to it.

Me and my husband celebrated my birthday on 5th October. We went to 1-Altitute for Dinner and drinks which happens to be the world or Asia’s highest Al Fresco Bar. It’s on the 62nd floor and the view is awesome.

My husband also bought me a book and a bookmark. He wanted to buy more but I don’t shop books for full price in Singapore. They are way too expensive. But I have been searching this book for some time and glad I found it.

I’ve tried to finish all the review copies I have before leaving but I still have 3-4 books left and I don’t think I can finish reading any by tomorrow. So I’m not going to stress myself over it. I’ll just finish them when I come back.

I wont have internet access till 26th while I’m at my mother-in-laws place but I do have a connection when I go to my parents place. I don’t think I will blog but I will definitely reply to all the emails and stuff.

Sorry for the poor quality of the photos. My Camera is usually very good but I don’t know what went wrong this time.

I’m back…

Sorry for not updating for so long but for the one month I was home, I didn’t feel like doing anything except catching up with friends and my sister. And then there was my cousins wedding too.

I did read though, obviously. In fact I finished quite a few books although I haven’t written even a single review so far. I returned to Singapore 2 days back and since then I was busy unpacking and cleaning the house. Applying for jobs is also forefront on my agenda now.

I guess it will take me a couple of days more to get into blogging but till then I am planning on visiting all the blogs I missed reading.

How have you all been?

Off to Srilanka…

Yup, I am going to Srilanka tomorrow for 17 days, yay!!! I’m so excited. I’ve never been to Srilanka in spite of it’s proximity to India. I admit it was really never in my places to visit someday but as I have been finding out more about the country via the internet, I can’t help but get excited.

The thing is my husband is going on a business trip and since I still don’t have a job :(, I decided to accompany him. I really don’t know whether I would be able to access the internet. Yes, the hotel will provide it but since it’s a 5 star hotel, the rates are going to be very high. I’m just hoping I find a net cafe close by to continue blogging. But if not, I will just have to take an involuntary break. To be frank I don’t feel like taking a break because I had a weeks break when I was sick and since I don’t have a job, blogging does not burn me out.

I have started rambling again. Anyway, if anyone has been to Srilanka before or know anything about the place, please do let me know what places I should not miss out on.

Sorry for not updating for so long. I caught a nasty bug, I was down for almost a week. I’m never this sick for more than 2 days in a row. I had high fever, nausea, body ache and a few other things. We were worried it would progress to dengue fever but thankfully it didn’t. I am good now.

I couldn’t bring my brain to write anything on this blog. I have read 4 books but was not in a state to write reviews or anything else for that matter and I’m not straining myself too much.

I feel so much better now and I also wrote a review today 馃檪 I feel myself again. Sorry for not commenting. I did visit a few blogs but didn’t comment. I’ll take it easy for the weekend though and be back by Monday. Hope you all are doing well.

Please do let me know if I’ve missed anything important or interesting in the blog-sphere.

Meeting Melody and Alice

I’m afraid that if I put this off for some more time I might not post about it at all. Thats how lazy I am. I still don’t have a job and I really have no excuse. As Melody and Alice said “I can blog all day”.

I, Alice and Melody

I met Alice and Melody on Friday (26th). Alice had a conference in Singapore, so that made it really convenient. We met at City Hall MRT and from where we went to a vegetarian place for dinner.

Melody got these awesome books for me. Thank you Melody 馃檪

We had a great time talking and generally knowing more about each other. After dinner we took a stroll in Suntec city. I had been there before but I saw things I hadn’t seen the first time. The most memorable was The Food Republic.

Food Republic: Taken by Alice

Isn’t it gorgeous? They are not actually books though, they are wallpapers, I wish I could get some for my house 馃檪

Meeting Melody and Alice was so much fun. Melody is as sweet and chirpy as she seems from her blog. And Alice is well, Alice. I got to see how she manages to click such awesome photographs. You can have a look too.

Alice in action

I’m so glad I met them, they are both very genuine and friendly.

I really hope we can do this again. Thank you melody and Alice and thank you both for sending me the pics.

Updates…from Singapore…

Hi everybody, how are you all. I just thought I would post an in general update before resuming with regular blogging.

We reached Singapore on 8th Dec after a lovely week in Goa.

  • We spend the next week setting up house, buying grocery and house hold stuff. My husband (I had wanted to say this for so long 馃檪 ) went to work on Monday and I spend time cleaning up the house.
  • It’s weird sitting at home doing nothing, I’m going to resume my job hunt asap.
  • Singapore is a cool place, very systematic and organized, I feel it even more aswe flew directly from the chaotic Mumbai.
  • We visited the Night Safari here and it was beautiful and like everything else very organized.
  • I love the weather here, it’s warm, just the way I like it.
  • And you know what? I got my Library card from a regional library here and I’m so excited. It’s on my husband’s name as I don’t have my permanent visa yet. There are not many English books but I still love it. It would take me some time before I’m going to be tired of it. I got these, they were all in my wishlist :

  • I really like the way Singaporean women dress, they are chic and stylish without being over the top. Not many people wear Jeans here though, so I guess I’ll have to slowly change my wardrobe. It kind of makes sense since it’s hot here.
  • Singapore is expensive and I really have to stop converting dollars to rupees everytime we shop.
  • We saw 2 movies since we are here:

New Moon: Boring, I mean really:聽 we couldn’t wait for it to get over. I kept telling my husband there is some really nice climax to the story but everything was kind of meh. Jacob was good though and so was the forks background.

RocketSingh-Salesman of the year: Really good concept and a good movie overall. We really liked it.

Random Updates

These updates do help me get things into perspective and see what all is going on with my life. You are probably not that interested but you get to read them anyway.

  • First things first. It’s getting very cold and I have realized that I have come to hate cold weather. I used to love it before but now even the slightest cold makes me uncomfortable. Give me the warm weather and summer anytime.
  • My boyfriend would be husband found a flat in Singapore and he sent me the photographs yesterday and I must say I’m really impressed with the way things work with the rent system in Singapore.
  • I had to send back my wedding ring twice, first time they had got the design wrong and the second time the finishing wasn’t good. If I’m spending so much I want the design to be perfect. Hopefully it will be ready by Sunday. He has also ordered his ring and I’m surprised by how non-fussy the process was 馃檪
  • My college friends wedding reception this Saturday, this means I’ll get to meet a lot of people I haven’t been able to for a long time. yay!!!
  • I have to constantly remind myself why I am getting my wedding stuff stitched from a designer rather than my friendly neighborhood tailor. She keeps on postponing the date saying she is busy with things like ‘kids school function’, ‘going to Mumbai’, ‘family function’ and stuff. I mean I get it that you are doing it for a hobby but I’m not getting my dresses stitched from you for hobby. I hope she gets them ready on time.
  • Wedding photographer booked, wedding make up woman fixed. yay…
  • Neither wedding card nor reception card has been printed yet. But I guess a couple of days more.
  • I feel so bad leaving so many of my books behind. I have almost finished all the ARC’s, except 3-4 which I plan on finishing this month.
  • My last date at this job is on 6th Nov. I’m still trying for a transfer; let鈥檚 see how things work out. But I’m looking forward to the 20 days off before the wedding.
  • What else? I’m reading Where the Heart is which also happens to be an Oprah book club pick. So far, it’s good.

What’s up with you guys? Anything new?

Before you go any further, I would like to tell you where this all started.

It started when an author put a link back to my review of his book.

See? What I mean? How sad does that look? So I decided why not have a button and change my avatar in general, I’m kind of bored of this girl.

So I spend more than 2 hours in making these buttons which I thought were good enough at that time. But now I’m not so sure. I don’t quite like any of them or maybe I’m being too critical?

So dear all, please do tell me what you think? Do you like any one specifically or do you like all? Feel free to tell me to chuck them all.

I won’t feel bad except to regret the 2 wasted hours of my life when I should have read a book instead of making these useless buttons 馃檪

P.S: I鈥檓 kind of partial to the last one.

Thank you so much for your help. As Wendy said, looks like everyone has different choices 馃檪 But I guess many people like #5 and #9. I’m not so fond of #5, so I’ll go with #9. Thank you again, you all are awesome 馃檪

Diwali pics!!!

I had a fantastic day, busy but fantastic.

Today’s Diwali celebrations are over, it’s 11.30 in the night, I’m tired but not sleepy. So I thought I could upload some photographs on Picasa to free some space in my camera. So I thought why not upload some here too.

Pirated Books!!!

Source: bangalore-city.blogspot.com

Source: bangalore-city.blogspot.com

Okay let鈥檚 talk about Book Piracy. Here I’m not taking about eBook piracy where you probably see about hundred’s of eBooks being uploaded to Torrent everyday. I can safely say that I have never ever downloaded a book illegally.

Here I’m talking about paper books. I really don’t know about other countries but in India such piracy is very rampant. If you go to the major shopping areas, you can see number of vendors just display the pirated books on the street.

And people buy them. Now I never thought much of it before but since I’ve started book blogging and interacting with authors and publishers I realize what a huge impact this makes on the book publishing industry.

Am I guilty of it? Yes.

I own only 2 pirated books out of hundreds that adorn my shelf. The first pirated book I bought was The Da Vinci Code. We were going on a family vacation to the North and as we were about to board the train I realized that I had nothing to read in this 20+ hours journey. So I bought one from the only book vendor on the platform and yes, it was pirated.

The second book was The Maximum City by Suketu Mehta. I wanted to read this book really badly and none of the bookstores I asked had it. This was way before the book became a bestseller. I got so frustrated from the repeated trips to the bookstore that I bought one from a guy who was selling pirated books just outside the bookstore.

Do I feel bad? Yes and no. Do I feel disgusted or angry towards people who buy pirated books? No.

Let me explain. Books are expensive and what I’ve mostly observed is that people who read regularly are generally college students. Generally. They don’t have the money to spend 300 bucks on a book when they can buy a new pair of shoes or a T-shirt. I know I never bought books when I was not working. I joined the library. But there aren’t many libraries here. We have those very tiny libraries where you can probably finish all the books in a year. There are a couple of big libraries but then it’s not always feasible to travel the distance.

We also don’t have library sales or second hand book stores, at least not in my city which is also known as the Oxford of the East. In so many years here I have found only one decent second hand bookstore (which I now love). I think Mumbai and Delhi are better whereas second hand books are concerned. But not every city or town has this luxury.

Will I ever be caught buying a pirated book now? NO. Never. That鈥檚 the reason why you’ll find me saying over and over again that I’ll wait for the price to come down or I’ll wait for the paperback to release. It would be easier to just go out and buy a pirated copy instead of drooling over the display books and wish I could have them. But my conscience wouldn’t allow it.

I really don’t know where I’m going with this but I keep thinking about this whenever I pass any of these pirated goods. So I just wanted to put my thoughts forward.

What about you? Have you ever bought a pirated book before? What do you think of it? Do you have a lot of pirated booksellers where you live? I’m curious.
